Historic African Afar Gile Knife with Sheath
This beautiful piece of history measures 17 inches overall in the sheath. The blade is 13 inch long and is widest at the center at 2 inches. The hilt is timber with small losses where the blade joins and some larger ones of varying ages at the pommel end.
The sheath appears hand stretched around the blade and stitched with leather lacing with an extra long tip. The sheath shows wear, see pictures for details. Around the top of the sheath is a decorative patterned band of brass colored metal. The sheath is attached to a leather belt with circular belt buckle all appearing to be original.
This knife called guile in Afar, is both a traditional defense weapon and an ornamental object of the nomadic Afar tribe.
