Johannes Paulus Kruger (1825-1904) was a prominent Boer leader against British rule and president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republic (1883-1902) which later became the Transvaal Colony under British rule and then the Transvaal Province of the Union of South Africa.

They were stuck by the Prussian Mint in Berlin.
1894 1 Pond (Pound) Gold coin minted by the South African Rand Refinery. These are exactly the same dimensions and Gold content as the British Sovereign. They feature the portrait of Paul Kruger and the Transvaal Coat of Arms. Text reads ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK.
