Antique Sterling Silver Vinaigrette by Joseph Ash, London c. 1802
This is a fine example of an early 19th-century sterling silver vinaigrette crafted by renowned London silversmith Joseph Ash. Ash registered his maker’s mark (“IA”) with the London Assay Office in 1801 and was known for creating high-quality small silver items, including vinaigrettes. Hallmarked for London in 1802, the piece features a gilded interior with a perforated grill to hold a scented sponge. The hallmarks include the maker’s mark “IA” for Joseph Ash, the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head for the London Assay Office, and the date letter “G” for 1802. Retains the original sponge. A rare and desirable collector’s piece in very good antique condition, reflecting the skilled craftsmanship of early Georgian silverwork.
