Personal Artifacts of Captain Archie C. Kuntze, U.S. Navy (1920–1980)

This collection consists of items belonging to Captain Archie C. Kuntze, a distinguished U.S. Navy officer renowned for his service during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, where he served as Commanding Officer of the Headquarters Support Activity, Saigon. Dubbed “The American Mayor of Saigon,” Captain Kuntze played a pivotal role in the logistical and operational success of U.S. naval efforts in South Vietnam. 1.Officer’s Combination Cap (1964–1966):

•A U.S. Navy officer’s white combination cap featuring gold embroidered oak leaf and acorn patterns on the visor, signifying the rank of Captain (O-6).

•The interior bears a label with the name and title of Captain Archie C. Kuntze: “CO, HEADSUPPACT, Saigon,” denoting his command during the Vietnam War.

•Materials: Cotton twill crown, patent leather visor, gold-thread embroidery, and satin interior lining.

•Condition: Excellent, with minimal signs of wear.

2.Command Flag of Headquarters Support Activity, Saigon (HSAS):

•A ceremonial flag in bright yellow satin, featuring the official insignia of HSAS, with the words “U.S. Navy Headquarters Support Activity, Saigon” encircling a shield and anchor motif.

•Dimensions: Standard naval flag proportions.

•Details: Double-stitched edges and grommets for attachment.

•Condition: Vibrant and well-preserved, with no visible tears or discoloration.

3.Captain’s Tunic (U.S. Naval Academy and Vietnam War Era):

•A navy-blue wool double-breasted tunic adorned with gilt buttons featuring the U.S. Navy insignia.

•Gold embroidery on the standing collar, denoting affiliation with the U.S. Naval Academy during his formative years and ceremonial use during his later career.

The tunic has a small hole on the right sleeve near the bicep area, likely from age or wear. This detail does not detract significantly from its historical or aesthetic value.

•Condition: Very good, with the noted small imperfection.
